  28. SAN FRANCISCO, CA., April 26, 1993 - At the Association of Banyan
  29. Users International, held here, Banyan Systems and Hewlett
  30. Packard announced today a strategic relationship that involves
  31. technology sharing, joint product development, network attached
  32. printer support, technical support alliances and joint marketing.
  33. An important aspect of the relationship will be the development
  34. of new products to integrate Banyan's enterprise network services
  35. with Hewlett Packard's HP-UX and PA-RISC computing platform and
  36. to provide innovative printing solutions for Banyan customers
  37. using HP printers.

  39. According to James D'Arezzo, Banyan Vice President - Marketing,
  40. "Banyan's goal is to create open environments in which enterprise
  41. network services are available to all users, regardless of
  42. platform or physical location.  HP's leadership in RISC-based
  43. scalable UNIX platforms, coupled with a broad range of
  44. applications and database solutions, makes the company's
  45. offerings a desirable choice for Banyan's customers."

  47. Banyan's and HP's commitment to provide applications and network
  48. services across heteroeneous enterprise-wide networks creates a
  49. common technical direction for future networking solutions.  This
  50. strategic relationship will provide Banyan and HP customers with
  51. solutions to integrate and easily manage the complete range of
  52. Banyan VINES network services and HP products into enterprise
  53. information systems.  To broaden the number of supported
  54. platforms, Banyan will continue creating similar alliances with
  55. other industry leaders throughout this year.  Banyan's network
  56. services on HP-UX will be Banyan's first port to a RISC platform.
  57. Products resulting from these efforts will be available before
  58. the end of 1993.

  60. As part of the companies' strategic relationship, Banyan has been
  61. designated an HP Premier Solutions Partner, the highest level in
  62. HP's Software Supplier program.  This ensures that Banyan will
  63. receive a strong degree of HP collaboration to jointly market
  64. Banyan products.

  66. "The result of this cooperative effort will be client-server
  67. solutions based upon HP's PA-RISC platform and Banyan VINES
  68. enterprise network services," said HP's Bernard Guidon, General
  69. Manager of General Systems Division.  "This is an important step
  70. toward providing end users with the distributed-computing
  71. solutions they need.  These jointly developed products will help
  72. fulfill our customer's needs for an open communications
  73. environment that provides unparallel ease of use and
  74. administration."

  77.                Leading Database Vendors Support Relationship

  79. "Oracle has had long standing partnerships with both HP and
  80. Banyan," said Sean Bandarkar, Oracle Corporation's Director of
  81. Marketing, HP Division.  "This announcement gives our mutual
  82. customers more options for powerful solutions to their enterprise
  83. network needs."

  85. "Sybase is committed to providing open client-server solutions
  86. than span the enterprise," commented Stu Schuster, Vice President
  87. - Marketing, SYBASE.  "We're very pleased that SYBASE/HP
  88. customers will now have the advantage of Banyan's enterprise
  89. network services."

  91.                       Network Management Integration

  93. Banyan and HP's Network Management Division are collaborating to
  94. ensure that all of Banyan's support for HP products can be
  95. managed from HP's Open View Windows and UNIX management software.
  96. Customers using Open View will be able to use Banyan's enterprise
  97. network management services to locate and manage other VINES
  98. servers on the network.  Customers will gain integrated network
  99. management across their heterogeneous computing environments.
  100. The two companies will cooperate to broaden the manageability of
  101. Banyan and HP environments using HP's and Banyan's Network
  102. Management Technology.

  104. "Continental Grain runs its international business on Banyan's
  105. enterprise network services and is making a strategic move to
  106. client/server computing using HP's PA-RISC engines," said Hilly
  107. Fuchs, Assistant Vice President, Continental Grain Company. "The
  108. integration of Banyan's enterprise network services with HP-UX
  109. creates a strategic advantage for our business by tapping the
  110. broad scalability, outstanding performance and ease of use and
  111. management of the resulting distributed computing platform.
  112. Continental Grain is one of the founding members of the Network
  113. Applications Consortium which is working with vendors to
  114. integrate their products with VINES enterprise services."

  116.               Expanded Relationship With HP Printer Division
  117.  
  118. Banyan also announced plans today to provide support for network
  119. attached printers. Banyan will offer a network adapter that will
  120. work with HP's high-performance LAN-ready printers which support
  121. HP's MIO interface.  The network adapters implement the VINES
  122. routing protocols which allow printers to be physically located
  123. anywhere in the network. The Banyan Remote MIO printer adapter
  124. supports Ethernet and Token Ring networks and is complemented by
  125. a line of external printer adapters that allow non-network ready
  126. printers to be directly attached to the LAN (see Network Printer
  127. Support Release).

  129.                         Technical Support Alliances
  130.  
  131. As part of the broadened relationship between HP and Banyan, the
  132. two companies have signed several worldwide Technical Support
  133. Alliances.  These TSA's will ensure that customers using products
  134. from both companies in their networks will be able to receive
  135. technical support from either company.  One such TSA focuses on
  136. support for customers running Banyan services in an HP
  137. environment.  Another TSA includes a working agreement with HP's
  138. printer division to handle support requests across all product
  139. lines as well as an agreement to support certified platforms from
  140. the PC division running VINES.  The European TSA allows for the
  141. two companies to collaborate closely by, among other things,
  142. twice yearly intensive training in each others products.

  144.                           Certification Programs
  145.  
  146. Hewlett Packard has been a participant in Banyan's Platorm
  147. Certification Program since 1990.  Since joining, HP has
  148. certified over 34 configurations. HP was the first vendor to
  149. certify a SCSI disk/tape subsystem independent of the Platform
  150. Certification Program. Currently, Banyan and HP are working on
  151. other programs which will enhance the product offerings of both
  152. companies.

  154. Banyan recently announced support for HP's 100mbs Ethernet
  155. proposal and plans to continue working closely with HP to ensure
  156. that VINES is compatible with HP's proposal should it become a
  157. standard.

  159.                         Industry Reaction Positive
  160.  
  161. "At Saros, we have built our product line around a philosophy and
  162. architecture based on openness and interoperability," said Wayne
  163. Carpenter, President and CEO, Saros Corporation.  "We think the
  164. Banyan/Hewlett Packard relationship is a strong signal that
  165. heterogeneous networks are becoming increasingly integrated.
  166. This is what customers want and need to meet the demands they
  167. face as they link thousands of PC users together across the
  168. enterprise.  Banyan and HP are answering this challenge,
  169. providing an integrated platform that supports a wider variety of
  170. enterprise networking applications in more native environments."

  172. John Howman, President - Allied Computer Group said, "At Allied
  173. Computer Group we have a number of customers who are running UNIX
  174. systems and who would greatly benefit from the services that
  175. Banyan provides.  This relationship between Banyan and HP will
  176. simplify the lives of customers already running VINES on an Intel
  177. platform with UNIX systems.  They will now have the option of
  178. eliminating one server and simplifying their environments.  We
  179. enthusiastically support this relationship between Banyan and
  180. HP."

  182. According to Sietse Brouwer, IS Manager, Dutch Rail Division of
  183. Infrastructure, "Within the decentraalized Infrastructure
  184. Division of Dutch Rail we are funding our business applications
  185. on a country-wide Banyan WAN comprising eighty servers. We are
  186. very pleased with the Banyan HP alliance which will provide us
  187. with high performance database servers and will enable us to
  188. further integrate CAD applications with our business
  189. applications. All of this while retaining the flexibility and
  190. manageability of VINES."
